Gamelan, Traditional Ensemble Music of Java and Bali in Indonesia

Gamelan is known as one of the cultural heritage that has value, role and its own position in the cultural treasure of the archipelago. For indigenous peoples in some local entities Indonesia, gamelan present an important instrument, both in religious rituals as well as their artistic expression. Gamelan known as is not just a style of music traditions, but also space exploration and collaboration of modern art. Bentara Budaya Bali held a gamelan art appreciation agenda in collaboration with  Gamelan Sekaa Gita Asmara-Kanada (director I Wayan Sudirana , Ph.D ), Gamelan Taniwha Jaya New Zealand School of Music ( the direction of Jack Body ), Sekaa Gamelan Salukat (landing Dewa Alit ) and Werdi Swaram ( landing Gde Yudane ). This event took place on July 18, 2013 at 18:00 , at Bentara Budaya Bali, Jalan Prof. Dr. Ida Bagus Mantra No. 88 A, Ketewel, Gianyar - Bali.



" Each group will display its latest creations gamelan music composition. Interestingly, all of which try to elaborate on the art of gamelan with the possibility of a new creation which in between tradition and modern combined into a charming musical diversity , "said Putu Aryastawa of Bentara Budaya Bali .Gamelan compositions that were presented titled New Gamelan music, inspired by the richness of traditional arts. Each group will respond gamelan in perspective respectively. " From this performance, we can see how the efforts of the interpretation of the Balinese gamelan style and combined with the breadth of modern creativity , " said Putu Aryastawa.

Musical composition .
No less than eight compositions will be presented by four gamelan group consisting of Gamelan Taniwha Jaya ( Wellington , New Zealand ), Gamelan Gita Asmara ( Vancouver, Canada ), Gamelan Wrdhi Swaram ( Denpasar, Bali ) and Gamelan Salukat ( Ubud , Bali ).

The composition is arranged in the headlines, " North to South: An International Concert of New Music for Gamelan ". In addition to the strains of gamelan charming , will perform a theatrical motion collaboration also try to respond to these musical works.

Gamelan Taniwha Jaya will perform four compositions, each titled Padhasapa ( Jason Erskine ), Delirious Euphoria ( Briar Prastiti ) , Headrush ( Gareth Farr ) and From Shadows ( Anton Killin ). This group consists of the New Zealand community college students who studied Gamelan. Under the direction of Jack Body and New - Zealand School of Music ( NZSM ). They create a variety of repertoire that combines tradition and modern and has performed in various following opportunities to collaborate with various artists on the occasion of performing in Indonesia since 2003.

Another group that will perform is Gamelan Gita Asmara was founded in 2001 by Michael Tenzer as an ensemble group of students at UBC Ethnomusicology Department. In the process, it became a nonprofit group that tries to musical exploration by using this type of Balinese gamelan, Semaradhana. Under the direction I Wayan Sudirana and composer Colin McDonald and Jocelyn Morlock, Gita Asmara intense exercises and experiments in the field of music in order to achieve the aesthetic achievements of new high value. This time they will display the works of the Sphinx ( Michael Tenzer ) with the collaboration of choreographer and dancer motion Justine A. Chambers.

The Gamelan Wrdhi Swaram and Gamelan Gending Salukat will bring Bebarongan ' Musty - musty ' ( I Ketut S. Widianta , Wrdhi Swaram ), Water ( Gde Yudane , Wrdhi Swaram ) and Genetic ( I Dewa Ketut Alit , Gamelan Salukat ).

Both groups have demonstrates some musical numbers , combining Eastern and Western musical distinctiveness following unusr various cultures. Wayan Gde Yudane and Dewa Ketut Alit, through his repertoire over the years, trying to cross borders grip musical tradition, which be attached with elements of modernity, in order to achieve their free gamelan unexplored, but did not rule out the roots of its culture.
