Lampung has ancient glory history when remaining is reflected to the traditional dress in Lampung, Tapis among others, a richly gold thread decoration is appeared either in the weaving or embroidery are mostly the pride of Lampung people.
This tapestry – the Tapis – is a woman’s ceremonial skirt from the Lampung. A skirt such
as this was once the required costume for all ceremonial occasions. It is made of thick,
striped cotton, which was hand woven, then covered with traditional motifs including
stylized human forms, dragons and ships, rendered in thickly couched gold thread. As an
important display of wealth, tapis were heavily laden with gold, some weighing as much
as four or five kilos.
Tapis is a woven sarong with large plain stripes in dark blue color, maroon or natural color, brown. The stripes are decorated with gold embroidery pattern, the embroidery pattern is in harmony position. There are several patterns such as sulam tapis enuh, tapis Dewo Sano from Tulang Bawang region Manggala district, tapis Limar Sekebar, the tapis has star decoration, the word kebar is derived from the Islamic word of Akbar the Mighty God as a creator of nature and human life.
The wealthier Paminggir people of the coast make tapis with design of people, horses
and riders couched in golden thread on a plainweave stripped background. Women of
the neighbouring Kauer people make extensive use of tiny mirrors called cermuk, which
are combined with an embroidered scroll motif into bands around their tapis sarongs.
This tapis is worn with a ceremonial jacket which has cermuk mirrorwork down the front
lapels, many tiny cowries heels applied around the collar and a woven songket backpiece
bordered with shellwork. In Lampung, beadwork was sometimes used as a substitute for
weaving to make tampan and palepai.
The gold embroidery decoration is shown in the decoration of pelaminan wedding bed decoration with floral motif of Persian style.
The use of embroidery is applied on the daily needs such as slippers, tissue, and the male headdress Kopiah. Is applied on the painting of Islamic caligrapy from the Holy Quran.
